This five-minute clip aired at CinemaCon and in theaters before A Minecraft Movie. Millions of views later, it’s generated some serious talk amongst fans.
The first four minutes consist of a single scene in which Superman literally crashes to Earth from space. He whistles for his trusty superdog Krypto, who drags him back to The Fortress of Solitude, where several robot helpers tend to his wounds. The final minute contains mostly images from the teaser trailer from a few weeks ago.
While feedback has been largely positive, some fans have questioned whether this is a good depiction of Superman or not. One critique in particular claims that this depicts Superman as too weak. Another criticizes the use of robots tending to Superman and how it may be too corny for a general audience.
One thing to keep in mind when watching this trailer is that we still do not have context for this scene. We do not know who or what Superman fought. Nor do we know where or even how the battle took place. Yes, Supes got banged up pretty badly. But until we know the full context, it’s a little premature to judge how weak Superman looks.
Superman is often described as being invulnerable, which he certainly is in conventional means. But the bottom line is you CAN make him say “OW!” and hurt him… If you hit him hard enough… We’ll know who or what made Supes say “OW!” when Superman is finally released in theaters this July.
