Daredevil: Born Again Episode 8 “Isle Of Joy” Review

We’ve reached the penultimate episode for Season One!

SPOILER WARNING! The following contains slight spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episode 7! Do not proceed if you wish to avoid spoilers!

MAJOR POINTS

  • Matt deduced that Vanessa put the hit on Foggy
  • Bullseye escaped from prison to kill Fisk
  • Matt took the bullet for Fisk

The episode begins with the prison moving Benjamin Poindexter (aka Bullseye) from a high-security area to the general population area. Presumably, this is so he can “accidentally” meet an unfortunate end.

Matt stays with Heather in her hospital recovery. Heather believes she saved herself and that Daredevil was like other vigilantes, too reckless. Later, Matt learns that she also has Fisk as a client, which freaks him out.

Matt visits Josie’s for the first time in a year. He realizes Bullseye was hired to kill Foggy. He visits Bullseye in prison, who goads Matt into attacking him. This enables Bullseye to escape disguised as a cop.

Vanessa kills Adam and rejoins Fisk. They hold a massive party to celebrate the Red Hook renovation project. During the event, Fisk meets with Swordsman, where they have a reverse of the threat/warning conversation from a couple of episodes ago. Fisk reveals that he knows Swordsman’s identity. Matt arrives late, bypasses Heather, and cuts in on dancing with Vanessa. He tells her that he knows she hired Bullseye to kill Foggy.

Bullseye sneaks in with his rifle and tries to assassinate Fisk. However, Matt dives in front of the bullet and… saves Fisk?!?

MAJOR QUESTIONS

  • Wouldn’t Bullseye killing Fisk raise the ire of Vanessa?
  • Why would Matt sacrifice himself to save Fisk?

OVERALL GRADE: B

There were definitely some plot twists. Vanessa killing Adam seemingly solidifies her allegiance with Fisk. Did Bullseye try to kill Fisk based on their history? Could it be that Vanessa was double-crossing her husband?

It may seem silly that Matt would save Fisk. But remember, many superheroes, even the darker ones, tend to look down on killing. Even in the original Netflix series, Daredevil had plenty of opportunities to kill Fisk but did not. We’ve seen Batman in similar situations with his villains.

MAJOR QUESTIONS

  • Why was Bullseye aiming for Fisk?
  • What will Heather think when she figures out Matt is Daredevil
  • Are Fisk and Vanessa on the same page again?

OVERALL GRADE: B

This had its plot twists. Bullseye getting put into the general area of the prison was likely done to make killing him easier. Thus, it’s logical to believe that Fisk made it happen. That would certainly explain the renewed hatred Bulleye has for Fisk.
