Superhero Sunday: The Phantom

The Phantom is about as old school as you can get for superheroes. In fact, he predates Superman by two years.

In addition to his comic serials spanning over 1600 (?!!) issues, The Phantom has appeared in many other comics. He was even part of the animated superhero team Defenders Of The Earth with Flash Gordon and Mandrake The Magician.

Billy Zane played him in a 1996 theatrical film, back when almost all superhero movies sucked.

Here, courtesy of Archive.org, is the first live action adaption of The Phantom. The complete 15 part 1943 serial for your old-school enjoyment. Grab some popcorn, invite some friends, and check out one of the original superhero movies.

Geekville Radio: Super Bowl Commercials And More

The biggest sporting event of the year is in the history books, as are the many commercials that air specifically during the game. Seth and Crazy Train go over five trailers in particular that caught their eye, all listed here for your convenience.

Logan

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Stranger Things 2

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Transformers: The Last Knight

In TV News, The Arrowverse may be getting bigger as CW is reportedly in talks for a Black Lightning show produced by Greg Berlanti.

“This is a swift turnaround for the project, which was shopped to other networks by Warner Bros. TV immediately after Fox opted not to go to pilot, with the CW emerging as the likely new home. I hear Fox brass ultimately decided that the superhero show was not a good fit into its already crowded genre drama space that includes the DC/WBTV series Gotham and Lucifer, Seth MacFarlane’s upcoming space dramedy, and two pilots: the X-Men-themed drama written by Matt Nix and The Passage; all are from 20th TV.”

Also on CW and produced by Berlanti, Riverdale had debuted and is pulling decent numbers.

On the review front, Seth and Train review the NBC sitcom Powerless with differing views. The show had modest numbers, so will it stick around? Especially since the show we got is not the show originally filmed.

“Unlike the episode that aired last night, this version of Powerless was undeniably cute. The story focused on a group of insurance agents who sincerely wanted nothing more than to help troubled people — the result of living in a city where superheroes run rampant and cause unquantifiable levels of damage — get the money they deserve. The team dynamic was apparent, and the group of genuine, caring coworkers was juxtaposed against their new boss, a typical comic book villain who only cares about getting rich, making for a promising setting.”

Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD is back, and once again has hit the ground running. While numbers seem OK, the reception has been very good, averaging 8.5 out of 10 on IMDB. How has the LMD story played out so far? And has Jeffrey Mace won over Train and Seth with his backstory?

In the final segment, Train talks about Marvel’s diversity movement, and what it does for longtime fans. It’s a thought provoking discussion we’d like to hear your thoughts on.

All this and more in another fun-filled Geekville Radio!

Super Bowl Commercials, Black Lightning To CW, Riverdale, Powerless, Agents Of SHIELD, Marvel’s Diveristy

On the news front, The Arrowverse may be growing a bit as Black Kightning is rumored to be getting a CW series produced by Greg Berlanti. Train and Seth also talk Riverdale, and review Agents Of SHIELD LMD, and NBC’s Powerless. In the final segment of the show, they discuss the movement by Marvel for more diverse characters. It’s a thought provoking topic that we’d like to hear your feedback on.

Examining The Doctor: The Power Of The Daleks Part Six

It’s been a long but fun ride as we close out The Power Of The Daleks. Mark returns to help Seth give his knowledge and insight for this animated adaption of the long lost Doctor Who classic.

Recently released on DVD and Blu-Ray, The Power Of The Daleks is an animated reconstruction of the first Patrick Troughton story originally broadcast in 1967. It aired only once in The UK, and was one of the casualties of a massive film erasing measure by The BBC in the early 1970s. Fortunately, the audio still exists and the animated reconstruction was commissioned by The BBC.

Join Mark and Seth as they bring their signature blend of historical knowledge and humor into Part Six of The Power Of The Daleks!

Power Of The Daleks Part Six Examined

Mark returns to help Seth provide their humor and insight to the grand finale of The power Of The Daleks. Only broadcast once in 1966, this adaption is the closest we may ever get to seeing the long lost classic starring Patrick Troughton, Michael Craze, and Anneke Wills.

Superhero Sunday: Pryde Of The X-Men (1989)

If you frequented arcade games in the early 1990’s you probably saw that monstrosity. A SIX PLAYER arcade game devoted to The X-Men. Not only was this giant quarter muncher a favorite among fans, it’s also one of the few, if only, game where Dazzler is a playable character.

However the story of the game is a bit older.

Before the classic 1990s X-Men animated series that aired on Fox, there was an attempt by Marvel to produce a syndicated series through Sunbow. Animation fans may remember Sunbow as the company that made the Transformers and GI Joe syndicated series 80s kids grew up on. Some of the regulars from those series even showed up here, including Michael Bell (Duke in GI Joe) as Cyclops, Frank Welker (Megatron in Transformers) as Toad, and Alan Oppenheimer (Skeletor in He-Man) as Blob.

The animation is classic Sunbow, as is much of the music. Only a Pilot episode was produced, but did not get picked up after the initial airing during The Marvel Action Universe. However, through the magic of The Internet, it is preserved on YouTube. The basic plot of this pilot episode became the premise of the classic arcade game, though the game of course had far more depth. And bad guys.

Examining The Doctor: The Power Of The Daleks Part Five

It’s the penultimate episode of the long lost Doctor Who story The Power Of The Daleks! Seth flies his TARDIS solo to provide commentary on the animated adaption. In this episode, Bragan assumes control of the colony while The Daleks continue to organize their extermination of all humans.

This commentary will work for both the black and white and colorized version of the episode, so do not worry about which version you need to watch.
