Nostalgia Trip: The Dukes Of Hazzard (1979-1985)

It’s the last show of the month. And to be a little different, we are debuting a new segment. We like to call it Geekville Radio’s Nostalgia Trip. The debut edition of Geekville Radio’s Nostalgia Trip is devoted to the classic 1980s TV show The Dukes Of Hazzard. Seth “Zandrax” Zillmann and “Crazy Train” Jonathan Bolick talk the history of the show and why it is so iconic almost 40 years later.

As ardent fans know, Dukes was actually spun off of a 1975 feature film Moonrunners, which had a very similar vibe. Both that film and the TV series were created by Gy Waldron, and are based on the stories of Jerry Rushing. Crazy Train provides a brief course in moonshine whiskey and moonshine running.

How well do you know the background of Bo, Luke, Daisy, and Uncle Jesse? No matter your level of Dukes fandom, you might learn a few things. Which Duke was a Vietnam Vet? Which was a star football player in high school?

And of course, what good are the heroes without the villains? JD “Boss” Hogg, Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane, Deputies Enos Strate and Cledus Hogg made up the recurring antagonists for The Duke family. Then of course there were the out of town strangers that would be up to no good each week.

You knew trouble was coming to Hazzard when you saw a basic Plymouth Fury riding into town.

Seth and Train also dive into the 1982-83 season which had the controversial replacement Dukes, Coy and Vance.

But perhaps most importantly, they talk the vehicles.

The General Lee – 1969 Dodge Charger

Boss Hogg’s Car – White 1970 Cadillac De Ville Convertible

Daisy’s Car (Season 1 & 2) – Yellow Plymouth Roadrunner. Also possible Dodge Challenger substitution

Dixie (Daisy’s Car Seasons 2-7) – Jeep CJ-7

Uncle Jesse’s Truck – Early 1970s Ford F Series Pickup

Cooter‘s Tow Trucks – Various International, GMC, and Ford Tow Trucks

Police Cars – 1970s Dodge Monaco, Late 1970s Plymouth Fury.

Another notable trait of the show was the number of guest stars who either were big stars, or went on to become big time actors. 70s villains Charles Napier and William Smith. Steven Williams (21 Jump Street), Jonathan Frakes of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame, Henry Gibson (Laugh In), Richard Moll (Night Court), Ernie Hudson,  James Avery (Shredder from TMNT), Gerald McRaney, Dick Sargent, Dennis “Mr. Belding” Haskins, Pat Buttram, and many others.

While Hazzard Country Georgia may not actually exist, Train does provide geographical evidence as to where Hazzard County would be on a map if it did. Don’t believe us? Listen to Train’s evidence and you’ll hear why.

Now you know where to find Hazzard County Georgia!

If you’re a 70s kid like Train, an 80s kid like Seth, or even came to love Dukes Of Hazzard after the fact, there is something for you in this edition of Geekville Radio’s Nostalgia Trip. Our goal is that, regardless of your level of fandom, you’ll enjoy this podcast and maybe even learn something about what was arguably the most “Southern” TV show to ever air on television.

As mentioned during the show, Crazy Train has amassed a list of Outlaw Country songs for Spotify, which fit perfectly with the attitude of Dukes Of Hazzard.

Disney/Fox Merger, San Diego Comic-Con Panels

One of the biggest stories in all of geekery finished another chapter. The merger of Disney with 20th Century Fox properties has been approved by stockholders. This brings us another step closer to Disney having control of Fox material. This has obvious effects on two major properties

Marvel

  • How would this affect the MCU?
  • Could we get Hugh Jackman back?
  • What could be airing on the upcoming Disney streaming service?

Star Wars

  • Will we get a Disney produced box set?
  • What about the 3D releases?
  • Will we finally get the original Unaltered Trilogy?

In other Star Wars news, Lucasfilm has officially announced that Carrie Fisher will be appearing in Episode IX via unused footage from The Force Awakens. Plus, two more names have been announced in Richard E Grant and Naomi Acke.

And of course, Episode IX looks to be the final Star Wars movie in the Skywalker saga. Does this mean the end of the “Episode Format”?

AMC has reinstated Chris Hardwick as the host of Talking Dead, after being suspended last month. Plus, Disney has fired director James Gunn from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.

The second half of the show is devoted to panels from San Diego Comic-Con. Mainly the Arrowverse shows, but there’s a little bit of Wonder Woman and Shazam talk. The panels are linked below

Aquaman Swims Tall In New Trailer!

One of the more anticipated trailers for DC’s movie universe was finally unveiled today at San Diego Comic Con. Debuting at the Hall H Panel today, the Aquaman trailer gave us our first full look at the feature film take on the long standing Justice League member. The plot centers around Arthur Curry’s evil half-brother Orm attempting to wage war on the rest of the world.

Aquaman opens this December, and is directed by James Wan (Saw, Furious 7). It stars Jason Momoa (Stargate Atlantis) in the title role, along with Amber Heard (Magic Mike XXL), Temuera Morrison (Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones) and Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV).

To give an idea of what Orm is like, check out this scene from Justice League Unlimited, which shows Aquaman’s badassery.

Ant-Man And The Wasp Review, Plus News

The latest Marvel MCU movie is here with Ant-Man And The Wasp. Seth and Crazy Train give a near 60 minute discussion (including SPOILERS) about the film, and where it fits in the Infinity War story. The review begins at about 25:30.

The first part of the show talks news, including the rumor that Keri Russell may be joining the cast of Star Wars Episode IX. What kind of part will she be playing? Somebody is going to be Rey’s parents sooner or later…

In the Marvel world, Kevin Feige has announced that there will be three Marvel MCU movies per year from now on.

It’s one of the reasons we’ve expanded to three films a year, is so that we could do the sequels to films that people have responded to — because we love to make continuing stories with characters people have responded to — but also keep doing the stuff that nobody’s ever heard of, and people go, ‘Why are you doing that?’ That’s fun.

News has also broken that in the next MCU Movie, Captain Marvel, Samuel L Jackson will be digitally de-aged for the entire movie.

All this and more in another fun-filled edition of Geekville Radio!

The Future Of Star Wars, Morbius Movie, Primer For Ant-Man And The Wasp

Unless you’ve been living on Hoth for the last few weeks, you’ve probably heard about the poor performance of Solo at the box office. Rumors are now running rampant that future Star Wars spin-off movies may be shelved. Seth and Crazy Train look at the rumors and try to separate fact from fiction. Do we know the real story? How many movies does this consist of? And could they be adapted for other media instead? What about the TV show?

Also according to rumors, Kathleen Kennedy’s future at LucasFilm may be in jeopardy. Can we separate rumor from fact?

One of the reasons for the divisiveness in fans has been the depiction of Luke Skywalker. Is this what was planned during The Force Awakens? Or could Rian Johnson have taken a sudden left turn and change everything.

But wait, there’s more Star Wars news! Lando Calrissian himself, Billy Dee Williams, had to cancel an appearance at the Saskatchewan Entertainment Expo citing a filming schedule conflict. Could this add fuel to the speculation that he is Episode IX bound?

In Marvel movie news, Jared Leto has all but confirmed that he will be playing Morbius The Living Vampire in a future spin-off film. Will Spider-Man be part of the story?

Finally, the latest Marvel MCU movie opens this weekend. Get ready with our primer for Ant-Man And The Wasp with spoiler-free anticipation of where this movie fits with Infinity War.

All this and more in another fun-filled edition of Geekville Radio!

As an added bonus, Crazy Train made this special Spotify Playlist with an insanity theme.

E3 Fallout

This episode of Geekville Radio has two main sections in News and talking the fallout of the 2018 E3 expo.

THE NEWS

Comcast threw the world a curve ball by making a $65 billion dollar bid to buy 20th Century Fox. While Disney and Fox had been at the forefront, Comcast and Fox had been already talking for some time. What could this mean for the Marvel MCU? Could this mean “21st Comcast Fox”?

In DC Movie news, the working title for the second Wonder Woman movie is Wonder Woman 1984. Director Patty Jenkins tweeted this photo showing Chris Pine on the set as Steve Trevor. Could this be a decendant of the original, a la Lyle Waggoner in the TV series? Or could something more sinister be at work? And what of Lynda Carter herself?

E3 FALLOUT

The second part of the show is dedicated to news Seth and Train found interesting from E3. This is of course not an exhaustive or comprehensive list. We do recommend checking out our sister podcast You Just Got Fragged for a more in depth look at E3.

Square Enix (Seth)

Perhaps the biggest Square Enix news is the official trailers and gameplay footage for Kingdom Hearts III. Clearly we see the addition of characters from Frozen, Incredibles, and Toy Story. Could we be seeing Marvel or Star Wars characters at some point? And what’s with a version costing over 200 bucks?

Also featured prominently was the Shadow Of The Tomb Raider trailer, which showed some very Batman Arkham style gameplay.

Seth also showed interest in the Dragon Quest XI game since he loved the NES games so much back in the day

Ubisoft

Crazy Train is ready for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which is set in Ancient Greece.

Microsoft

Halo Infinite Announcement Trailer

The Initiative, Undead Labs, Playground Games, Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games have all been acquired by Microsoft.

Fallout 76 E3 trailer showed the multi-player gameplay, to which Train and Seth both lament the potential aggravations from a primarily multi-player format.

Elder Scrolls VI reveal trailer finally hit. Hopefully everybody has better knee armor.

Not one, not two, but THREE Gears Of War themed games in Gears 5, Gears Tactics, and Gears Pop.

The next entry in the Forza series, Forza Horizon 4

Also, Cyberpunk 2077 seemed to be a big surprise hit with fans

Last but not least, Seth in anxious to see what the relaunched Battletoads will look like.

Bungie

A teaser trailer for Destiny 2 expansions, which includes the new Gambit Mode. As well as a story trailer that depicts the death of fan favorite Cayde 6.

Nintendo

Super Smash Bros. is back, and this time sports every character from every previous game.

Underwhelming Announcements

EA did announce the new Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order title. But offered no artwork or footage.

And, of course, the news about Red Dead Redemption 2 is that there is no news.

Is there any game you liked that we didn’t mention? Let us know!

Star Wars: What Happened? Arrowverse Season Roundup, E3 Preview

It’s a giant-sized edition of Geekville Radio this week! THREE huge topics!

STAR WARS: WHAT HAPPENED?

Seth and Crazy Train return to talk the disappointing performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story at the box office. What could be to blame for the lackluster reception? Could this be a backlash due to poor audience reception of The Last Jedi? Or merely a result of a saturated market? Or perhaps the recasting of such a beloved character is the reason? Whatever the case, Solo and The Last Jedi have very different Critic vs. Audience ratings.

ARROWVERSE

The middle portion of the show is devoted to the winding down of the current Arrowverse shows on CW. John Constantine has been announced as a regular for Season 4 of Legends Of Tomorrow. On top of that, a new showrunner has been announced in Beth Schwartz. What could we expect in the coming seasons? Are there any new or returning characters on the horizon?

E3 EXPECTATIONS

Finally, E3 is right around the corner. Train and Seth chime in on what they hope to hear from the major game publishers this year.

Have any thoughts on the state of Star Wars, The Arrowverse, or E3? Drop us a line below and let us know what you think! The chances are good that feedback will be read on the air in future episodes!
