This Week In Geek News August 20th, 2018

Zandrax and Crazy Train are back with four main topics in the news.

First off, Mark Hamill has been cast in the second season of Knightfall. He will portray Talus, and will debut in the second season.

“a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran of the Crusades, who survived captivity for ten years in the Holy Land and is tasked with training the new initiates to the Order”

No premiere date is listed as of our recording, but presumably the second season will premiere late this year.

Disney has released the first glimpses of the Resistance animated series with this trailer

This is quite the departure from the 3D CGI animated of the previous two series. Does this look like another can’t miss? Or is it less appealing that the previous shows.

Marvel has teased the full blown Iron Fist costume in the teaser for Season 2.

Both Zandrax and Train liked the trailer, and any fan of Iron Fist comic will probably be happy with what’s teased.

In DC news, Watchmen has been picked up for a full season on HBO. Jeremy Irons leads the cast for the series that will be set in present day, 30 years after the events of Watchmen took place.

What did you think of these trailers? Or any of the other news? Sound off below!

#208 – Drax Out Of Guardians 3? Spiner and Witwer to Supergirl, Batwoman Cast

Geekville Radio is back with the usual co-hosts Seth and Crazy Train at the helm.

Dave Bautista has publicly stated that wants James Gunn reinstated as director for Guardians Of The Galaxy 3. Could this mean Drax is written out of the film? Could other actors follow suit? Heck Marvel themselves are backing Gunn, so what could be the outcome?

In another casting that has taken the geek world by storm, Ruby Rose has been confirmed to play Batwoman in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover in December.

Not to be outdone, Supergirl Season 4 continues to beef up its cast with geek favorites. Star Trek veteran Brent Spiner has been announced as the Vice President of Earth 38’s USA. And Sam Witwer will be the antagonistic Agent Liberty.

Speaking of TV, the big rumor going around is that the Star Wars live action series for the Disney streaming service will be a 100 million dollar ten episode season. Not only that, it will center around the planet Mandalore in a post-Return Of The Jedi galaxy. Fitting given creator Jon Favreau’s connection to Mandaloreans from The Clone Wars.

Trek Talk: Jean-Luc Picard Returns, More CBS All-Access Series, Tarantino Movie

If you’re a “trekkie” or “trekker”, you’ve come to the right place! This episode of Geekville Radio is devoted almost entirely to Star Trek

In a move that has been speculated for some time, Sir Patrick Stewart officially announced his return to the Star Trek franchise as Jean-Luc Picard. While the details are not made yet, Picard’s presence will be on the as yet unnamed second Trek series slated for CBS All-Access. Seth and special guest Will give some fun speculation on what Picard might be doing.

Also in the Trek World, up to four series are in the works for the CBS streaming service.

Not to be outdone by TV, current Spock Zachary Quinto gives an update on the rumored Quentin Tarantino helmed feature film. Given Tarantino’s style, it’s almost assuredly an R-Rated movie. If that is the case, it will mark the first time Star Trek has ventured into R-Rated territory. The big question looms: Is Tarantino a fit for Star Trek?

In late breaking news, veteran Trek actor Brent Spiner has been announced as part of the cast for Supergirl’s fourth season. Plus, Orange Is The New Black’s Ruby Rose has been cast as the previously announced Batwoman.

Ruby Rose Cast As Batwoman For Arrowverse Crossover

In a casting coup that will likely please the geek community, Ruby Rose has been revealed as the new Batwoman. The character was announced several months back as a focal part of this year’s Arrowverse crossover, which has become an annual event for the CW superhero shows.

Rose is of course best known for the smash hit series Orange Is The New Black, currently in its sixth season on Netflix.

Batwoman, not to be confused with Batgirl, was introduced in the 1950s. The character was revamped in 2006, and given her own series in 2011.

The multi-part crossover special will air in December on CW. If all goes well, Batwoman will be given her own TV series. Though no indication yet which of the existing 53 Earths she’ll hail from.

Disney/Fox Merger, San Diego Comic-Con Panels

One of the biggest stories in all of geekery finished another chapter. The merger of Disney with 20th Century Fox properties has been approved by stockholders. This brings us another step closer to Disney having control of Fox material. This has obvious effects on two major properties

Marvel

  • How would this affect the MCU?
  • Could we get Hugh Jackman back?
  • What could be airing on the upcoming Disney streaming service?

Star Wars

  • Will we get a Disney produced box set?
  • What about the 3D releases?
  • Will we finally get the original Unaltered Trilogy?

In other Star Wars news, Lucasfilm has officially announced that Carrie Fisher will be appearing in Episode IX via unused footage from The Force Awakens. Plus, two more names have been announced in Richard E Grant and Naomi Acke.

And of course, Episode IX looks to be the final Star Wars movie in the Skywalker saga. Does this mean the end of the “Episode Format”?

AMC has reinstated Chris Hardwick as the host of Talking Dead, after being suspended last month. Plus, Disney has fired director James Gunn from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.

The second half of the show is devoted to panels from San Diego Comic-Con. Mainly the Arrowverse shows, but there’s a little bit of Wonder Woman and Shazam talk. The panels are linked below

The Doctor Who/Pigs In Space Crossover You Didn’t Know Existed (And Can’t Live Without)

The Muppets recently had their live show at the famous O2 Arena in London England. Among one of the many sketches was Pigs In Space, a regular segment on the old Muppet Show. On this particular sketch, the crew of The Swine Trek encounter a certain Time Lord. Hilarity ensues.

Yes, it’s The Tenth Doctor himself, David Tennant. But if that weren’t enough, the sketch also ran with Tennant’s real life father in-law Peter Davison… who also happened to be The Fifth Doctor.

Two sketches, two Doctors. And plenty of awesome!

It’s also worth mentioning that former Doctor Who companion Kylie Minogue also helped in one of the musical acts, the famous “Rainbow Connection”.

Everybody attending seemed to love the show. Hopefully it sees some sort of official release.

Star Wars: What Happened? Arrowverse Season Roundup, E3 Preview

It’s a giant-sized edition of Geekville Radio this week! THREE huge topics!

STAR WARS: WHAT HAPPENED?

Seth and Crazy Train return to talk the disappointing performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story at the box office. What could be to blame for the lackluster reception? Could this be a backlash due to poor audience reception of The Last Jedi? Or merely a result of a saturated market? Or perhaps the recasting of such a beloved character is the reason? Whatever the case, Solo and The Last Jedi have very different Critic vs. Audience ratings.

ARROWVERSE

The middle portion of the show is devoted to the winding down of the current Arrowverse shows on CW. John Constantine has been announced as a regular for Season 4 of Legends Of Tomorrow. On top of that, a new showrunner has been announced in Beth Schwartz. What could we expect in the coming seasons? Are there any new or returning characters on the horizon?

E3 EXPECTATIONS

Finally, E3 is right around the corner. Train and Seth chime in on what they hope to hear from the major game publishers this year.

Have any thoughts on the state of Star Wars, The Arrowverse, or E3? Drop us a line below and let us know what you think! The chances are good that feedback will be read on the air in future episodes!
