The season finale is here! Matt Murdock got shot protecting Kingpin! What’s next?
SPOILER WARNING! The following contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episode 9! Do not proceed if you wish to avoid spoilers!
MAJOR POINTS
- Kingpin brutally killed the Police Commissioner Gallo in his signature style
- We got confirmation of Vanessa hiring Bullseye to kill Foggy
- Punisher and Daredevil finally cut loose in a brutally violent fashion
- New York City is under Martial Law
The episode opens with a flashback to the prior year, showing Vanessa getting Bullseye out of a mental ward so he can kill Foggy and his friend.
In the present day, Matt awakens in the hospital being treated for his bullet wound. He instinctively asks for Karen, which is not going to please Heather. Matt quickly sneaks out of the hospital and returns home… only to find Punisher already there waiting for him.
Sure enough, Kingpin’s goons arrive, and we get the classic Hard-R violent fight we’ve come to expect from the Daredevil series. This is not a sequence for the faint of heart. While it may not be as graphically gory, what’s depicted is gruesome stuff. The duo escapes when Karen arrives in a car.
Matt and Karen find Foggy’s case from last year, which reveals a port in Red Hook could be made exempt from government regulations, allowing Kingpin to turn it into his own crime haven without legal issues. Hence why Kingpin wanted it renovated. Meanwhile, Frank is caught by the Punisher Cops and detained after he refuses to join them.
Sheila, Fisk’s Chief of Staff, betrays Commissioner Gallo after finding out he’s organizing a takedown of Mayor Fisk. Gallo is brought to a meeting with Fisk and his team of corrupt Punisher Cops. Fisk personally kills Gallo in front of his goons by squishing his head, something he’s done in the comics before.
Mayor Fisk goes on TV and declares New York is now under Martial Law. Matt realizes he has to be Daredevil again to save the city.
In the obligatory post-credit sequence, Frank escapes custody by mercilessly breaking a guard’s arm.
MAJOR QUESTIONS
- Where is Bullseye now?
- What is the relationship between Bullseye and Vanessa? Is he fired now?
OVERALL GRADE: A
This was a strong finale. Sure, my prediction of a “Foggy is alive” reveal did not come to pass, but it didn’t have to because the story still makes sense. It feels like we are going into the third act of a major story arc, so next year’s season will likely hit the ground running.
