The BBC announced that Chris Chibnall will end his three-season run as the showrunner for the long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who. Today it was announced that Rusell T. Davies will return to the show and will serve as showrunner starting in 2023.
This marks the first time anybody has returned for a second stint as showrunner in the history of the show. Davies is responsible for bringing the show back to the airwaves in 2005 after a 16-year gap. He then ran the show for four seasons which saw Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant as the respective ninth and tenth incarnations of The Doctor.
2023 will be the 60th anniversary of the iconic series. It’s a safe bet that there will be special programs commemorating the milestone. Could the anniversary special see past favorites such as David Tennant or Matt Smith step back into the TARDIS? Time will tell.
A fourteenth incarnation of The Doctor is also set to debut in 2023.
