Geekville Radio #342: Star Wars Returns (Again)

We heard the announcements and the rumors. We then heard more announcements and rumors… And now we hopefully have the correct announcements and rumors concerning the future of Star Wars on the big screen.

Disney and LucasFilm kicked off the year with the official announcement that Jon Favreau will write and direct The Mandalorian & Grogu. This will presumably be the finale to the TV series which has spanned 24 episodes over three seasons.

This marks at least four Star Wars films currently in development.

  • New Jedi Order – This is an unofficial title since that is the period name used in the EU books for the post-movie era. LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced that Sharmeen Obaid-Chionoy will direct the film with Daisy Ridley reprising the role of Rey Skywalker/Palpatine. The movie will be written by Steven Knight, who is best known for the TV series Peaky Blinders. No other official details have been released other than the film will be set approximately 10 years after The Rise of Skywalker and will depict Rey reestablishing The Jedi.
  • Dawn of the Jedi – Again, this is an unofficial title given to an era previously explored in EU novels and comics. James Mangold will direct and co-write the film with John Ostrander. Mangold’s resume includes Logan, Ford vs. Ferrari, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. John Ostrander is probably best known for his contributions to the comic book world as he created the character of Amanda Waller and the modern incarnation of The Suicide Squad for DC Comics.
  • Mando-verse Finale – Fan-favorite writer/director Dave Filoni was also announced as the writer and director for the movie which will tie together all the shows in the current Disney+ TV timeline. This presumably includes The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka since he contributed to all three. However, Filoni was promoted to Chief Creative Officer for LucasFilm a few months back. which means he will be involved in all Star Wars movie and TV projects going forward. It’s not clear whether this will affect this movie’s development. While not confirmed, it’s possible this movie morphed into Favreau’s TMaG.

Of course, other Star Wars feature films were previously announced. Some, if not all, are presumed canceled or in development limbo.

  • Rogue Squadron – This film was announced in 2020. However, Patty Jenkins was attached to a third Wonder Woman movie. Once WW3 was canceled, one would think that would have freed up time, but nothing new has been announced for several years.
  • Taika Waititi’s movie – Much like Rogue Squadron, Taika’s movie has had little news in the last few years. Though kathleen Kennedy did mention that it was still in the works lat year.
  • Rian Johnson’s Trilogy – Cancellation was never confirmed, but Johnson has a third Knives Out movie in the works, so it will be some time before he’d be free to make his Star Wars return.
  • JD Dillard and Matt Owens – It doesn’t look like this got much traction. Though reports have said the story would have been about Exegol and what it was doing all this time.
  • David Benioff/DB Weiss – Confirmed as canceled after they signed a huge money deal with Netflix. It also would have been a Jedi origin story. So it looks like James Mangold’s film took this one’s place.

There are also several TV series still in the works aside from the presumed Mandalorian Season 4.

  • Acolyte – Carrie-Anne Moss of Matrix fame stars in the first TV series to be set during the High Republic Era. It is also the first series to focus on The Sith. Showrunner Lelye Headland revealed the show will show how things got to the point that The Sith could infiltrate The Republic without the Jedi noticing. It will also show Jedi in fancier costumes than the standard brown robes we’re used to seeing. Joonas Suotamo will portray a Wookiee not named Chewbacca.
  • Skeleton Crew – This has been called the Star Wars version of Goonies. Jude Law leads the cast which includes Jaleel White. Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man No Way Home”, runs the series that will also premiere sometime later this year. It sounds like a show that will be right up the alley for this generation’s kids.
  • Bad Batch Final Season – This will likely show the final fate for most of the clone troopers after the events of Revenge of the Sith.
  • Tales of the Jedi Season 2 – The only thing we know about a second season of the animated anthology series is that it is happening. Where it goes could be anywhere since the individual stories cover multiple eras.
  • Ahsoka Season 2 – As expected, Ahsoka will get a second season and will lilely set up the events of Dave Filnoi’s feature film.
  • Andor Season 2 – Andor as seen plenty of delays, but it looks like the second and final season will air at last in 2025.
